Redvers Co-op History

Tuesday, November 29, 1949, Redvers Co-op was organized. The first permanent Board of Directors was elected in 1950. The sale of petroleum products began in early 1941, with the first petroleum being delivered by barrels until November of 1951. The first headquarters was a building 12' x 12'; this was used until a large one was built in 1957.

March 1953, Hutton Co-op amalgamated with Redvers Co-op. In this same year, Fertile and Antler Co-ops amalgamated with the Redvers Association. Carload lots of lumber were sold and cement was added to the inventory.

1954 saw further expansion when Wauchope amalgamated with Redvers; in this year livestock feeds went on sale.

During the first ten years of operation, members had provided themselves with $1,371,000 of goods and services (sales for the year 1997 were $7.4 million).

1961 saw a 16' addition built on the main building.

1962 saw a lumber shed 60' x 100' built.

In 1967, a portable feed mill was added.

1968 saw the petroleum warehouse enlarged.

About this time, Wauchope and fertile coal branches were closed. 1973 coal sales at Antler were discontinued and their sheds closed.

1971 saw a 36 x 60' Quonset and storage building added and an enlargement to the hardware section in early 1973.

Later the Co-op moved across the track and opened a hardware store downtown.

In 1988, the downtown store was closed and a new 160' x 100' building was erected and opened, housing all of the operations under one roof as it is known today.

1998 brought a cardlock to Redvers, offering clear and dyed diesel as well as regular gas, 24 hours a day. This service to our members included showers and vending machines.

The year 2000 saw the purchase of the former IGA store, and the new Co-op Foodstore being officially opened August 22, 2000.

Our history has produced over 100 million dollars of sales from Redvers and surrounding communities, thanks to the support of over 1900 members.
